You can expect Android Oreo on your Samsung phone by early 2018

Own a Samsung? Looking for the latest Android update? Let’s see what Samsung has planned for you.

According to Güncel Miyiz (via XDA Developers), Samsung has already started work on a “pilot model” for Android 8.0 Oreo and the company aims to start rolling out the new OS at the “beginning of 2018.” The statement doesn’t mention which devices are set to receive the update, but you’d have to expect that the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, and Galaxy S8 Edge would be among the first Samsung phones on the upgrade list.

Last year, Samsung updated its flagship phones to Nougat in the beginning of the year as well, so there is basically no progress in terms of how fast those updates come. This year, once again, users will have to wait months and months for an Android 8 Oreo update that Google’s Pixel phones have already had for weeks.

Rollouts for new Android updates are typically staggered, as first the smartphone manufacturer needs to work on the OS and then, comes the turn for the networks which depends on the country.

So far, Samsung hasn’t confirmed a full list of devices set to receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update, but its safe to say that the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 will both be on the list. These devices will be prioritized ahead of older ones, like the Galaxy S7. Either way, if you are running a Samsung smartphone, the official Oreo update may take a while to get to you, unless you opt to root your phone and install a custom ROM.

The major new features that Android 8.0 Oreo brings are:
  • picture-in-picture video
  • notification in different sizes
  • notification dots
  • various performance and security improvements
